Beaches – Catherine Hill Bay
Nestled between two ocean beaches and hugged by vast national parks, Beaches captures the very essence of life on the coast. Located in breathtaking Catherine Hill Bay, just 90 minutes north of Sydney CBD and 35 minutes from Newcastle, Beaches is the perfect combination of city proximity and idyllic coastal seclusion.
LOCAL COAL MINERS FORMED A SURF CLUB AT THE BEACH IN 1928 THAT’S STILL IN OPERATIONS TODAY AND AS THE SURF CULTURE GREW IN POPULARITY AROUND THE WORLD, CATHERINE HILL BAY’S BEACHES BECAME A HOTSPOT FOR SYDNEY’S BEACH CULTURE.
Affectionately known as “Catho,” Catherine Hill Bay is named for a schooner that ran aground in the bay in 1867. After the discovery of coal, the New Wallsend Company bought the land in the area, built a jetty to load coal on ships and opened its mining operation in 1873. Catherine Hill Bay became a prosperous area where coal miners and their families lived and enjoyed some of the most beautiful beaches and landscape in Australia if not the world.
The cessation of mining came about in 2002 and in 2015 Rose began transforming this unique place into a coastal village of 550 torrens title home sites that will have a full complement of activities and services including a proposed neighbourhood retail centre. The design of Beaches includes seven parks and reserves, a state-of-the-art on-site waste water treatment system and a grey water reticulation method to service the new homes. The planning, design and construction of Beaches is well underway with hundreds of families now calling this stunning location home, helping Rose to create the ideal coastal neighbourhood.
