Breakfast Point
Just 16 kilometres west of Sydney’s Central Business District, Breakfast Point is a 52-hectare master-planned Rose community fronting 1.8 kilometres of the upper reaches of Sydney harbour. Breakfast Point’s unique location was the inspiration for the vision of a traditional coastal village. Steeped in history, records indicate that the name is derived from the first interaction between European settlers and the land’s aboriginal owners, the Wangal Clan. HMS Sirius’ First Lieutenant, William Bradley, observed the following:
“WE LANDED TO COOK BREAKFAST ON THE OPPOSITE SHORE TO THEM (BREAKFAST PT.). WE MADE SIGNS TO THEM TO COME OVER AND WAVED GREEN BOUGHS. SOON AFTER WHICH 7 OF THEM CAME OVER IN 2 CANOES AND LANDED NEAR OUR BOATS. THEY LEFT THEIR SPEARS IN THE CANOES AND CAME TO US. WE TIED BEADS ETC. ABOUT THEM AND LEFT THEM OUR FIRE TO DRESS THEIR MUSCLES WHICH THEY WENT ABOUT AS SOON AS OUR BOATS PUT OFF.”
Under Rose’s stewardship of the land since the late 1990s, Breakfast Point has become one of the largest urban renewal communities in Australia and today boasts itself as a 2,650-dwelling, self-sustaining village with nearly one-third of it devoted to carefully landscaped gardens, parks and community facilities.
Breakfast Point, now a suburb in its own right, is distinguished by its coastal architecture and traditional interiors. The community was carefully planned to be able to compliment and enjoy the beauty of the natural environment, the light and the views. Between and among the 63 apartment buildings, 83 townhouses and 40 free-standing homes are Breakfast Point’s residents-only country club, village green, community hall and village centre with shopping, child care centre, cafes and restaurants.
Rose has been recognised for the founding of Breakfast Point at local, national and international development and planning industry forums. Breakfast Point was awarded the 2004 Urban Development Institute of Australia Award for the best Lifestyle Development and the 2004 New South Wales Urban Task Force Development Excellence Award for a Master Planned Community. Breakfast Point has also been recognised by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales as patron of INTBAU, the International Network of Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism.
